Unlocking a Vintage Piggy Bank: What's Inside?

Welcome to our blog, where we share stories and tips for locksmiths and anyone interested in locks and keys. In today's post, we'll explore the adventure of unlocking a vintage piggy bank and discovering what's inside. This fascinating story is both educational and entertaining for locksmiths and lock enthusiasts alike. Let's dive in and see what we find!

The Vintage Piggy Bank Adventure: One day, a young boy named Uriah visited our workshop with his father, Andy. Uriah had recently acquired a vintage piggy bank from his great-grandmother, who received it from a friend. The piggy bank contained old coins, but it was locked and couldn't be opened. Uriah brought it to us in hopes that we could unlock it and reveal the treasures inside.

Initial Attempts to Unlock: At first, we tried using a lock pick to open the piggy bank. Although we could spin the lock, we couldn't find any mechanism that needed to be clicked. We almost gave up on the task, but Uriah encouraged us to keep trying.

A New Approach: After studying the piggy bank further, we decided to try a different approach. We used a Dremel tool to drill down the center of the key, creating a custom key with small wings on each side. This new key finally allowed us to open the piggy bank and discover the contents inside.

What's Inside the Piggy Bank? As Uriah eagerly lifted the lid of the piggy bank, we found a collection of coins from the 1960s and 1970s. Among them were quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies, with some dating back to 1957. Although the coins didn't add up to a fortune, they provided a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The experience of unlocking a vintage piggy bank proved to be a fun and educational adventure for everyone involved. We learned new techniques for opening locks and discovered the unique history of the coins inside.
