To tell if a lock has 5 or 6 pins, insert a key blank or pick and gently feel for the number of distinct clicks or springy points as you move along the keyway from front to back. Each pin stack will create a slight resistance or "bump," so count these points to determine if there are 5 or 6 pins. Alternatively, you can sometimes see the number of pins by looking into the keyway with a flashlight.
